Backup Tools to store data in the cloud, USB drives using SQL Server, MySQL and Oracle

Iperius Backup features are created to get the highest level of  performance and intuitive configuration. Iperius allows you to perform different backup types on many devices: NAS, RDX, LTO or DAT tapes, external USB drives, networked computers, FTP servers, Cloud storage services, such as Google Drive, Dropbox or SkyDrive. Iperius can backup SQL Server, MySQL and Oracle databases.

You can also make Drive Image backups, and create whole-disk images for Disaster Recovery and system bare metal restore with a few clicks. In addition you have many essential features such as e-mail notifications, detailed log files for each backup operation, execution of external processes and scripts, backup of open files (VSS), installation as service, synchronization, AES 256 bit encryption, Zip 64 compression, etc.

Main features:

Disk backup / Network: this great software let you store your backups in NAS, external USB drives, RDX devices, computers in the network. Zip 64 compression, AES encryption, synchronization, and you can also have incremental backups.

Drive Image: You can copy all the information from an entire disk and automatically reinstall the system with some few clicks (bare metal restore). You do not need to reboot the system to create the disk image (hot backup), and you can restore in a different server with a different hardware.

Tape Backup: You can use any tape drive (LTO, DAT, etc.). Iperius backup compress your software and encrypts your data using AES encryption and includes automatic tape ejection. You can also restore files individually.

SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL: Iperius is a powerful and easy-to-use backup software for Oracle, MySQL and SQL Server. It can make automatic backups, it supports compression and encryption of backup files and copying of backup files to any destination.

FTP Backup and synchronization: You can  multiple FTP transfers, to and from unlimited servers. You can Upload and Download files zip them, encrypt them and limit the bandwidht.

Cloud Backup: You can easily send your backups to  Google Drive, SkyDrive or Dropbox,

Open file backup (VSS): Usually you cannot copy files because they are used by another process. However, with Iperius you have the Volume Shadow Copy functions. This feature allows you to do hot backups of Outlook files (.pst), virtual machines, mail databases, etc.

Highly configurable: It is a flexible and complete program, for backups. You can  filter and email notifications, transfer data and synchronize it.

Web Reporting: You can monitor the backups with a friendly and simple web interface.

I will now show how to do a simple backup using SQL Server and Iperius Backup to upload it to Google Drive or Dropbox.

In this example we are using SQL Server, but this great tool can work with MySQL, Oracle and growing.

Iperius Backup is a complete software for backing up SQL Server databases. Compatible with all editions of Microsoft database server: 2000, 2005, 2008 and 2012. With Iperius you can easily back up unlimited databases and servers, even remote, and run the restore in a really simple way, even creating a new databases. It has integrated .zip compression and encryption, backup verification and retention of multiple copies.

1. First we need to open the program

2. Press on user account icon and configure it with your SQL Server information (Windows or SQL authentication) and check if your connection is OK (Use Test connection button)

3. Then you can select if you will backup all your databases or select some of them.

4. You can select where you want to backup your databases (we will select the cloud option) and after that we will select the cloud service (dropbox)

5. After you select what you will backup and the path, you  will also need to configure other options like schedule, email notification and other options

You can now run the backup manually, modify it.

As you can see, Iperius is simple, fast, intuitive and supports multiple types of hardware, databases. It is definitively a great assistant for our daily database tasks.

New certification exam material for SQL Server Administration, Exam 70-462

Boson created a new exam for the exam 70-462 and you can downloat it here:

This exam in the topics is similar than the exam 70-432 for SQL Server 2008.

The main features added to SQL Server 2012 are the high availability and the installation in a Windows Core.

It now supports filetables to handle not structured data in a more efficient way.

Boson includes a free test for free and a complete set of question per 49 $us. There are 3 test exams with 50 questions each one. The exam not only includes explanations for each question. It also includes valuable links and references to improve the SQL Server knowledge.

You will be able to simulate the exam and have an score. You can watch the answers and explanations after the simulation exam. You will be able to dowload for free the simulation exam or use the web to take the exam.

If you already took a SQL Server certification, this new one will not be hard. If you did not, it is required real life experience or at least a lot of books read.

The Microsoft Exam 70-462 contains the following sections:

  • Install and configure (19%)
  • Maintain instances and databases (17%)
  • Optimize and troubleshoot (14%)
  • Manage data (19%)
  • Implement security (18%)
  • Implement high availability (12%)

If you are a SQL Server Administrator, this exam is a must. Even if your company has an older Sql Server version, it is important to know the new feature to make sure you do not need the last one.

If you are a SQL Server Developer, this exam will be usefull to complement the Developer Skills with some features to optimize the server. 

If you are just a beginner in the SQL Server world, this exam will help you to develop your skills for SQL Server.
